After turning their old school hall into a classroom, Kymbrook Primary School needed a new space to play and learn.
The children at Kymbrook Primary School in Bedfordshire are using their new outdoor hall to enjoy playing, performing, gym and creating in a new and stimulating learning environment.
Why did you want to develop an outdoor hall?
We needed to create an additional classroom to provide the space for our new pupils and this meant converting our old school hall. We wanted to build a replacement hall and it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new and unique to the school. At Kymbrook Primary we like to encourage the children to seek inspiration from the environment and an outdoor school hall was a fantastic solution.
What were the key elements that made TGEscapes stand out from other providers? The main reason for choosing TGEscapes was the look, design, and price. We had lots of other quotes and The Learning Escape were far more competitive. I also loved the fact the team were so flexible and we could design the building to the schools exact needs. The designs included all of the ideas Kymbrook Primary had put forward, alongside some new ones from the team. The advice given by the team at The Learning Escape was honest and helpful, they wanted to ensure that we were making the most of our space and that we were developing something that would really benefit the children. When we decided that we wanted to raise the roof for racquet sports the team were more than willing to do this. The quality of the build is second to none and it was inspiring to work with people who are so enthusiastic about their causes. We were amazed at how for a small school the team made no disruption to the school it was remarkable how they did it.
What are the biggest benefits youâve noticed for the children?
Since building the new school hall the children are much more excited about outdoor play. We are also now able to hold after school ballet lessons as the floor has been sprung which is very exciting for the children. The building was set up as a PE hall, but was also used a lot over Christmas for shows and it was really nice to have the space to accommodate everyone. The big windows let so much sunshine into the building and the natural light gives them an extra energy boost.Â

Situated in the heart of Norfolk, St Martinâs is an established school of excellence when it comes to sustainability and itâs one of the focuses of their curriculum.
Located in the lowest lying county in the UK, the pupils are very much aware of climate change with predictions like the sea levels are forecast to rise by 80cm over the next 50 years means they are eager to act now to ensure they grow up in the most eco friendly environment possible â starting with their school.
St Martins has taken several steps to ensure sustainability is part of every pupils routine at the school, with each class appointing an energy monitor whose job it is to make sure everything that can be turned off is turned off, this guarantees no unnecessary energy is expended. The school also boasts an impressive garden which teaches the pupils not only about living a healthy lifestyle and eating a balanced diet, but the garden itself is sustainably maintained. Rain water is collected to keep the garden watered and a school compost bin provides a healthy and sustainable source of soil.
To stay in keeping with their environmental attitudes, and to ensure they can keep growing and moving forwards, St Martinâs have recently replaced an old temporary classroom with a brand new state of the art eco friendly classroom. This new classroom will have a multitude of different uses including being used as a music room, an art room and a food technology room during in school hours with plans to use it as a breakfast club, an after school club, and a church club being considered too. This means that the whole community can benefit from this addition as well as the pupils.
The children have spent the last couple of weeks eagerly watching the erection of their new classroom and have had a say in not only what itâs used for, but also what eco friendly extras are added to their new building too, with sun pipes being one of the most popular suggestion which let a lot of extra light flood into the classroom dramatically cutting down on electricity needed to light the room. St Martinâs are also planning to add photovoltaic cells to help generate electricity too, all of which will lead to a dramatic reduction in their carbon footprint. All this along with their rain water collection and school compost and recycling incentives prove this school really deserves its reputation for being a pioneer in sustainability in schools.
St Martinâs are rightly proud if their reputation and are eager to spread the word about what theyâve learnt to their neighbours. They are planning on inviting other local schools to their new classroom and showing how their eco friendly incentives are benefiting their school and how these incentives can be implemented at other schools too.
